Obituary for Lynn Carter Woods Jr.

Lynn Carter Woods, Jr, born October 15, 1935 in Memphis, Tennessee, passed away in Houston, Texas on January 31, 2018. He was the eldest son of Lynn C. Woods and Sarah Cotter Woods of New Orleans, Louisiana. Lynn grew up in New Orleans, spent many memorable summers with family in Marianna, Arkansas and graduated from Metairie Park Country Day School, and Tulane University where he met his wife of 30 years, Sandy, and received his Law degree in 1959. He enlisted in the army as a second lieutenant that same year and was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1968. Lynn and Sandy lived in Williamsburg, Virginia and Brooklyn, New York until settling in Houston in 1961. He practiced law for over 50 years primarily in the field of oil and gas as a member of the Texas and Louisiana State Bar Associations and also sat on the board of the Hermann Park Conservancy.
Lynn greatly enjoyed the game of tennis and was for many years a member of the Houston Racquet Club and the New Orleans Lawn and Tennis Club. He made trips to Wimbledon to watch the matches. Lynn was also a member of the Stratford Club in New Orleans and participated in Mithras and other carnival organizations.
Lynn was a past president of the Houston Chapter of the Tulane Alumni Association and during this time engaged the Olympia Brass Band to come to Houston from New Orleans for the first time to parade in downtown Houston. He lived in New Orleans for several years and visited often enjoying time with friends at Galatoire’s and Antoine’s. Lynn was a blues, jazz and classical music aficionado. He also liked to travel and spent a great deal of time in Mexico early in his marriage and later traveled extensively in Europe. Lynn had a special affection for the Tuscany region of Italy. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Lynn was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra Patterson Woods; and his sister, Linda May Woods Nicholas of Charlottesville Va. He is survived by his three children, Kelly Alexandra Brink and husband W. Richard, Christopher Hamilton Woods and wife Carla, and Stephanie Carter Neverdowski and husband Charles; his brother, William Hamilton Woods of New Orleans; brothers-in-law, Richard Ludlow Nicholas of Charlottesville, VA, Wayne Marek of Houston, TX; and nephews, Carter Nicholas, Sandy Barnett, and Todd Marek. Lynn was affectionately known as Grumps to grandchildren, Nicholas Hamilton Woods, Charles Anthony Neverdowski, Lindsay Katherine Brink, and Zoe Elizabeth Neverdowski.
The family would like to thank Marcelita Brown for her loving care of Lynn for the last several months of his life.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm on Wednesday the 7th of February at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue in Houston. A reception is to follow at the Cathedral.
