Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Weyel (Church)
Mary passed quietly at home on January 7, 2019 surrounded by husband, Steven, and her beloved triplets, Foster Edward, Elizabeth Carroll, and Harrison Church. The date of her passing is her husband’s birthday and the family will now celebrate their two lives on this day as Steven and Mary always shared a very strong bond.
Mary was born in Houston, Texas on March 8, 1964 to her parents Jean Marie and Carroll Church and was welcomed by six sisters and one brother. As a child she adored her two ponies, Trixie and Rex which started a life-long love of all animals. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and began her studies at The University of Texas. She studied abroad living in London and returned to Houston and graduated from The University of Houston.
Mary was a sustaining member of The Junior League of Houston and chose her charities to benefit children, volunteering at the children’s ward at MD Anderson and Texas Children’s Hospital. She also offered her time to Child Advocates and Casa de Esperanza.
Her greatest pride in her life were triplets whom she was able to see them each on their way to a successful college start.
This has been a nineteen-year battle and the family wish to recognize the compassionate care of MD Anderson and especially Dr. Eric Strom who stayed with her during this entire journey. The staff of Houston Hospice has made this most difficult transition, a time for the family to enjoy each other and helped keep her at home as was her wish. Though she leaves this world, her light will shine through all the lives she touched.
Mary’s life will be honored on Saturday, January 12 at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Ave in Houston with a visitation starting at 1:00 pm followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks contributions to be made to Christ Church Cathedral. Donations can be made on the website at www.christchurchcathedral.org in Mary’s honor or mailed to the Cathedral.
